Social Practice

Social Practices is an evolving discipline in the contemporary art field. Often known as socially-engaged art, relational aesthetics, community art activism, it takes into consideration the social and political implications of publicly situated art explicitly and uses social relations as its primary medium.

At CSUSB the CBA / PAC (Community Based Arts / Prison Art Collective) is our most visible manifestation of this kind of art practice, but students create works in their classes that following this methodology, and social and political issues are paramount in the teaching all of all types of art and design making in our department.
