CAPS Provides Mental Health Services to Students

CAPS

Counseling and Psychological Services is one of 25-plus departments in the Division of Student Affairs. CAPS offers a wide range of services to support students. These services include individual and couples counseling, group therapy, and wellness workshops.

All enrolled CSUSB students that pay the health fee are eligible for Counseling and Psychological Services. CAPS can provide assistance and support to students dealing with personal issues that may interfere with them achieving their education or life goals, including adjustment to campus life, parenting skills, addictions, relationship or lifestyle issues, mood and anxiety disorders, or any other issue of concern.

In addition to counseling, Dr. Jennifer Moulton, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, wants students to take advantage of the group therapy sessions and wellness workshops CAPS provides the campus community throughout the year.

“Groups can be such a great place for people to connect with others who have shared experiences, shared identities, shared struggles, and to not feel so alone, because oftentimes, when folks are struggling, they feel like I'm the only one who feels this way,” said Dr. Moulton.

For students who are in crisis, CAPS offers crisis appointments every day and has a crisis phone line that is available to students after hours.

“If students are struggling and they really need to talk to somebody right away, they don't have to wait,” said Dr. Moulton. “They can give us a call, and we will do what we can to support, or they can come to CAPS, and we can make sure that they’re seen that day to have some support available.”

CAPS is staffed by licensed clinical psychologists, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, professional clinical counselors, and supervised graduate and post-graduate interns who are passionate about students’ well-being and ready to care for their needs.

An initial session includes assessment of presenting concerns and recommendations for further counseling at CAPS or referral to a community resource. To schedule an assessment, call 909-537-5040.

CAPS is located in the Student Health Center Building, west entrance, on the San Bernardino campus.
