CSUSB history professor discusses the latest on the nuclear deal with Iran, the U.S. and European UnionPressTVMarch 4, 2018

David Yaghoubian, a CSUSB professor of history, was interviewed about the latest developments on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. U.S. President Donald Trump has said they he will refuse to waive sanctions against Iran if his administration cannot reach an agreement with Europe to revise the agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), by May 12. Trump has strongly criticized the agreement.

Hassan Rouhani, president of Iran, spoke with Emmanuel Macron, president of France, to urge him and the European Union to pressure the U.S. to “respect the JCPOA,” the PressTV report said.

Yaghoubian said the EU can take economic steps to ensure that the U.S. honors the JCPOA. With Trump announcing tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, “This, I think, is an opportune time for the Europeans to think about maintaining their own sovereignty and their own economic interests globally. And, so, coming into conjunction with President Macron’s statements regarding the maintenance of the JCPOA, I think that primarily that the E-3 and/or the P-5-plus one members should emphasize that … they will not go along with any attempt to impose sanctions on May 12 after the 120-day period, and that they will fully support their businesses and commercial interests in Iran commensurate with the JCPOA should the United States continue its attempts to destroy the agreement.”

The interview with Yaghoubian starts at about 1 minute video.

Press TV is a 24-hour English language news and documentary network affiliated with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.
