Photography of CSUSB faculty among those included in review of new exhibit in RiversideLos Angeles TimesJan. 17, 2019 Photos by Cal State San Bernardino art faculty Thomas McGovern and Anthony Maher were published in a review of the exhibit “In the Sunshine of Neglect: Defining Photographs and Radical Experiments in Inland Southern California, 1950 to the Present.” Their work, along with fellow CSUSB faculty members Andrew K. Thompson and professor emerita Sant Khalsa, is among the 194 photographs by 54 photographers that are now on display at the California Museum of Photography and Riverside Art Museum through April 24. Author Susan Straight, writing in the Los Angeles Times, said, “Maher’s photos of his childhood houses replicated as models — his history re-created with tender care — take me back to my own street: the garage of every tract home I saw from my own bedroom window.” And of McGovern’s work, she wrote, “I loved Thomas McGovern’s ‘People in Cars’ (2008-12), taken at the Route 66 Rendezvous in San Bernardino — the parade of classic cars restored and worshiped by so many of my friends — the way we know a 1964 Impala cherried out, the way that historic highway still belongs to us, who live in this Inland Empire, driving slow and raising a chin to acknowledge the things we do that parts of America may never understand.” Read the complete article at “Finding a geography of home in the Inland Empire.”
CSUSB professor interviewed about missiles launched by Israel and Syria during conflict on Jan. 21Press TVJan. 21,2019 David Yaghoubian, CSUSB professor of history, was interviewed by the Iranian television network about the missiles launched by Israel and Syria at each other on Jan. 21. Russia says Syria’s air defenses shot down more than 30 cruise missiles and guided bombs during Israel's aerial attacks in the early hours on that day. The announcement came after the Israeli military claimed in a statement that it had struck what it said were Iranian targets in response to alleged rocket fire it blamed on Iran. Yaghoubian said he attributed the recent conflict to various motivations, including the “electioneering, and interests of reputation on behalf of” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; the potential of U.S. troops being withdrawn from Syria and “the hysteria going on within Israel and amongst neoconservatives and much of the American mainstream media;” and “an effort to demonstrate that Israel can, if you will, handle things on its own.” See the entire video interview at “Russia: Syria destroyed over 30 Israeli missiles.” Press TV is a 24-hour English language news and documentary network affiliated with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting
