Parent Appreciations

Young student reading

Welcome

Dear Parent/Guardian and Tutees,

The Watson and Associates Literacy Center (WALC) at California State University, San Bernardino is housed in the James R. Watson and Judy Rodriguez Watson College of Education. The mission of the Literacy Center is to assist students, grades kindergarten through 12, to improve their listening, speaking, reading, writing, and math skills.

The Watson and Associates Literacy Center is pleased to offer our services to the community. Each enrollee receives a customized tutoring program, which enables them to succeed academically. Children are assessed to determine academic literacy and numeracy skill levels.

Please complete the enclosed application, if you have not yet done so, and return it to the Literacy Center WCOE - Rm 119. Each applicant to the Literacy Center will be assessed using Freckle of Renaissance, an online assessment tool. For assessment scheduling for placement in the next tutoring cycle, call 909-537-2665. (Note: Assessments are administered at the WALC.)

Tutoring enrollment hinges on available spaces and the child's specific need. Children whose literacy achievement is less than proficient receive priority. Each child receives tutoring one day each week, 3:30-4:30 p.m. or 4:30-5:30 p.m. On the application, please indicate which day, Monday through Thursday, and the preferred time. You may be asked to attend on an alternate day depending on the availability of tutors. Regular attendance is necessary for continued growth and to achieve each tutee's potential.

Each tutoring session begins at 3:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. and lasts one hour. Instruction is 1 to 1; this enables your child to receive individualized instruction. Please remember to sign your child in for each session. Every child is encouraged to check out books from the WALC library.

At the end of each session, the tutor discusses the child's progress with the parent. The end-of-year report lists the results of the assessments that were administered. In addition, tutees and families enjoy a Literacy Celebration during the last week. This event showcases each tutee's work completed during the semester.

Parent Testimonies

I want to thank the Reading Specialists and Cynthia M. for the phenomenal help [that] she, and your program, provided for my son Isaiah. He showed great improvement in the short time your services were provided to him. I hope he can meet your requirements for the fall (sic.) school year and be accepted into your program again.

My sincerest gratitude, J.T.

The tutors and Reading Specialists at the Watson & Associates Literacy Center were a godsend for our family! The personalized and individual tutoring provided by the trained tutors and experienced Reading Specialists at the center helped [my] struggling reader improve multiple reading levels in just one quarter. The Reading Specialists and tutors provided professional guidance and the student-centered lessons catered to my child’s needs and interests. I credit my child’s now grade-level reading ability largely to the expertise and support of the Watson & Associates Literacy Center tutors and Reading Specialists!

Thank you, L.G.

My daughter Emily began attending tutoring sessions at the Watson Literacy Center when she was in the 1st grade. Emily was late in developing speech. She did not do well in kindergarten. A friend of mine told me about the Watson Literacy Center at CSUSB. I signed Emily up. She worked with her tutor weekly. Her first presentation during the Writing Celebration was on vowels. She was very shy but with the help and encouragement of her tutor, as well as the wonderful staff, Emily successfully did her presentation.

Emily is now in the 7th grade. She continues to receive tutoring sessions at the Watson Literacy Center. She is now able to read chapter books and volunteers to read aloud in her general education classes. Emily has had many interventions throughout her education. She is in the Resource Specialist Program at school. Week after week the commitment from the tutors (sic.) at the literacy center is always positive and encouraging.

Emily has had many different tutors over the years that she's received tutoring. Many graduated or moved on. However, each tutor [at the literacy center] was well-trained and worked well with Emily. The tutors shared with me what Emily worked on and how she is progressing each week. At the end of the quarter, a written report and an assessment are given to me stating her progress. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff at the literacy center. I have recommended tutoring to many of my colleagues and friends who have children.

To the staff at the Watson Literacy Center, I'm grateful. Thank you, D. F.
