Let your voice be heard! The Department of Communication Studies at California State University, San Bernardino will host the first Coyote Oracle Tournament on Friday, April 16.

This year’s theme is “Speak for Social Justice,” in which CSUSB oral communication students will have 4-6 minutes to perform a persuasive speech on a current social issue that needs immediate attention.

The event will be held virtually from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Speeches will be judged by CSUSB graduate students, faculty and special judges from the community. There are cash prizes for participants who place first, second and third, and all participants will receive a certificate for participating. 

Participant requirements: 

  • CSUSB undergraduate who is currently enrolled in Oral Communication class COMM 1006 for the spring 2021 semester.
  • Write an ORIGINAL persuasive speech that is 4-6 minutes (preferably following Monrose's Sequence) on a current social issue that needs change. No hate speech, political slander or profanity will be allowed!
  • Attend at least one preparation session at The Speaking Center in CSUSB’s Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration.  
  • Attend their speech time as well as the final round at 2 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Women Support Organization, a non-profit organization that provides women with assistance to start their own business as well as legal, health, education and financial guidance. It is being held in collaboration with The Speaking Center at CSUSB, the Center for the Study of Muslim & Arab Worlds, and Communication Society.
