The Center for Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (CIMES) at Cal State San Bernardino will host a teach-in, “Palestine Is Still the Issue,” on Thursday, May 24, from 6-7:40 p.m.

The program will take place at the university’s College of Education building, room CE-105.

“The CIMES teach-in on Palestine will shed a light on the recent atrocities in Gaza following the demonstrations against the controversial relocation of the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and the commemoration of the Nakba ‘Catastrophe,’ when most Palestinians became refugees as a result of the creation of Israel,” event organizers said.

The event is free and open to the public; parking at CSUSB is $6.

CSUSB faculty Ahlam Muhtaseb, communication studies, and David Yaghoubian, history, will deliver short lectures, show short video clips and hold a discussion to provide a sociopolitical analysis — as well as the historical context — of the ongoing conflict.

Dany Doueiri, professor of world languages and literatures, will chair the event and lead the discussion.

Protests have taken place since March 30 against Israel’s blockade of Gaza and U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement to move the American Embassy. Since then, 17 unarmed Palestinian protesters have been killed by Israeli soldiers, and many more injured. On May 14, which marked the 70th anniversary of the formation of Israel and official opening of the embassy in Jerusalem, 58 Palestinians, including several children, were killed and more than 1,350 wounded by gun fire by Israeli soldiers during mass demonstrations in Gaza.

The CIMES teach-in aims to provide the historical and political context of the Israeli settler colonial project in Palestine in order to help inform the students and campus community about the complexities of the conflict and the resulting humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
