The Canvasback is a casual visitor to campus: one was seen on 18 Feb 2012 in the flooded basin north of Badger Hill. It is an uncommon winter visitor throughout southern California where it can be found on deep water ponds, lakes, and reservoirs. The adult male Canvasback can be identified by its chestnut head and neck, black breast and rump, nearly white body, and black bill. Females have a pale brown head, neck, and breast and a light gray body. Both sexes are similar to Redhead, but can be distinguished by their longer, sloping bill and forehead.
