The Peregrine Falcon is a casual visitor to campus: an immature bird was seen 31 Jan 2012 hunting ducks in the basins near Badger Hill. It is an uncommon, year-round breeding resident in southern California, with additional birds from northern populations during migration and winter. The adult Peregrine Falcon can be identified by its gray head and upperparts, white underparts with black barring, and mostly yellow bill. Immature birds have a darker head and upperparts, creamy underparts with heavy, dark streaking, and mostly gray bills. Peregrine Falcons are known for being the fastest animals in the world, capable of reaching speeds in excess of 200 mph during stoops.
