Fontana Herald News

Tony Coulson, director of the Cybersecurity Center at Cal State San Bernardino, was quoted in an article about a federal program that funded scholarships for students studying cybersecurity, including two at Cal State San Bernardino, that is in line for more money.

Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-31st District) was instrumental in securing additional funding for the U.S. Department of Defense Cyber Scholarship Program. The House of Representatives passed H.R. 2740, the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Defense, State, Foreign Operations, and Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, 2020.

The bill includes Aguilar’s provision to appropriate an additional $3 million in funding for the program, bringing funding for the program for the upcoming fiscal year to $10 million. Including the two at CSUSB, 40 scholarships were awarded in 2018.

“These programs are critical to defending our nation in cyberspace. These resources are critical for not only our nation but our region,” said Coulson, a professor of information and decision sciences.

“This was intended to be my memorial tribute to those who died and were wounded on June 23, 2018, in a terrorist attack at Mesqel Square, Addis Ababa.
