Eighteen Cal State San Bernardino students volunteered part of their weekend to help needy families and the homeless at San Bernardino City Mission in Highland.

The students spent Jan. 21 preparing 275 food boxes, each box weighing about 15 pounds, which will be delivered to needy families and seniors in the community, said Bryant Fairley, assistant director of the CSUSB Office of Community Engagement, which coordinated the university’s volunteer efforts.

The students also made 450 hygiene kits for the homeless and organized more than 1,500 clothing items for the San Bernardino City Mission’s clothing closet, Fairley said.

The volunteers, ranging from graduate students, undergraduates and students from the university’s Palm Desert Campus, will visit the Louisiana cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge over spring break as part of the TRACKS program, a collaboration of Associated Students Inc., the Student Recreation and Wellness Department and the Office of Community Engagement, Fairley said.

The spring break trip marks the second time students have gone to New Orleans to help needy families, Fairley said. The trip also includes visiting Baton Rouge to help repair and rebuild homes of teachers victimized by flooding, Fairley said.
