Brian Levin, a former New York City Police officer who has studied hate groups for more than 20 years at the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, was interviewed for an article about Kyle Bristow, a 31-year-old attorney from Macomb County, Mich., who leads an alt right group called The Foundation for the Marketplace of Ideas.
Levin calls the foundation “a functioning legal-defense fund for an array of bigoted, extremist speakers who are sometimes unconstitutionally denied their First Amendment right on public campuses.'

Today’s “alt-right” ideas are “right out of the playbook of white nationalism from decades prior,” connected not just to race but morals and culture, Levin told USA TODAY.
The former cop turned researcher told the Free Press that race relations are believed to be at a 25-year ebb. White Christians are now in the U.S. minority, “trust in unifying institutions” — from the mainstream news media to Wall Street and the U.S. presidency — has been “declining for decades,” he said, adding that about 36 percent of Americans believe white people are under attack, with about 14 percent saying “not only are whites under attack, but people of color aren’t.”
