Dr. Faith Holmes Teyber, who retired in 2013 after nearly 30 years as a member of the Cal State San Bernardino Department of Psychology, passed away on July 4 after a long battle with a neurological disease. Faith was a masterful teacher, researcher, and clinician. Her exceptional talent as a therapist provided graduate students in the M.S. Clinical Counseling program with an outstanding education and clinical training experience for more than three decades. She was a widely known and very highly respected clinician throughout the region. Her collaborative work with Dr. Laura Kamptner over the last decade led to groundbreaking work with incarcerated mothers and fathers involving parent training, trauma recovery, and therapeutic intervention as a multipronged effort to stem the intergenerational cycle of incarceration. Faith published numerous articles and books on psychotherapy, cultural psychology, child abuse, and the psychology of women; her co-authored text with her husband Ed (Interpersonal Process in Therapy: An Integrative Model-7th ed.) continues to be one of the most respected and widely used textbooks on the therapeutic process in counselor training. Faith was a much-loved and highly respected teacher and clinician, a wonderful colleague, and a most beloved mentor to decades of clinical graduate students. Faith was always compassionate towards those in need, especially at-risk children, youth, and their parents. At the very young age of 5, as a result of witnessing the oppression and subjugation of her family and other South Africans who were fighting against apartheid, Faith was determined to lead a life where she could make a difference. Thus, she left her home in Swaziland, South Africa, at the age of 16 to attend college in California. She graduated in three years and ultimately earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at UCLA. She became a role model — “a star” — for members of her own family as well as other South Africans. Faith is survived by her loving husband, Ed, his two sons Ted and Reed, her sons Andrew and Cameron, and a host of other family members and friends.Tomás D. Morales
