Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency.

Over 1,700 college students die each year as a result of alcohol-related causes, including alcohol poisoning. Know this information can help you identify the signs and symptoms of a potentially dangerous situation.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning

What to look for:

  1. Person is unconscious or semi-conscious and cannot be awakened.
  2. Cold, moist, pale or bluish skin.
  3. Slow, shallow breathing with ten seconds or more between breaths.
  4. Vomiting while “sleeping” or passed out, and not waking up after vomiting.

What you should do if you suspect someone has alcohol poisoning:

  1. Get help. Call 9-1-1.
  2. Do not leave the person alone. Turn the person on his/her side to prevent choking in case of vomiting.

What you should NOT do:

  1. Do not assume your semi-conscious or unconscious friend will be OK sleeping it off.
  2. Do not let fear about how your friend may respond tomorrow prevent you from acting and getting help when they need it. It may be the greatest thing you could ever do in the name of friendship.
