A Moment with President Tomás Morales – July 2023

A Moment with President Tomás Morales – July 2023

Last month, I shared with you some of the ways that CSUSB is truly becoming an international university.  This month, I would like to provide you with an update on our international Education Abroad programs.

CSUSB’s international education programs are run out of our College of Extended and Global Education. The college has provided me with the latest information.

  • While education abroad numbers have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, in reviewing the data from Academic Years 2021-22 and 2022-23, the trend is positive:  Overall participation grew from 71 to 115, a 61.9% increase.
  • Participation in faculty-led programs has more than doubled from AY 2021-22 to AY 2022-23, though there have been slight decreases in exchange participation.
  • CSUSB's most popular opportunities continue to be faculty-led programs at 73%, while exchange opportunities through CSUSB and CSUIP add another 23%.  Research and conference participation vary year to year, based largely on interest and funding, and therefore represent only 5% of international mobility during this period.
  • As for popular destinations, Western Europe is clearly in the lead with Spain, the United Kingdom and Italy being the top three.

We know that participation in Education Abroad programs helps students earn higher GPAs, improve language skills, increase their employability and build career skills. We also know that this is a corner of the student experience we can provide at CSUSB which has tremendous potential for growth. I am therefore grateful for the terrific efforts being made by our College of Extended and Global Education: Hyunkyoung Oh (Interim Dean and Faculty Director, International Education), Ryan Griffith (Associate Dean) and the entire International Education team.

Until next time—
