Stephen Tibbetts, a professor of criminal justice at Cal State San Bernardino, shared his thoughts about a Riverside County crime-prevention program called Youth Accountability Team (YAT). A lawsuit against the county argues the program criminalizes normal teen behavior.
“I think YAT is one of the best programs I’ve ever seen for high-risk youth,” said Tibbetts, who oversees the assessment of the program. As part of his study he said he sat in on several meetings between YAT officers and referred students.
“I saw how drastically different and dynamic these cases are,” he said. “They dealt with it really, really well. At no time did I ever hear anything coercive.”
Researchers at CSUSB describe YAT as a “highly successful” program. According to their 2019 review of YAT, 72% of contracted students countywide completed the program during the 2017-18 fiscal year. Among those students, 8% were arrested six-months after completion.

CSUSB history professor David Yaghoubian comments on the Trump Administration mulling more troop deployments in the Middle East regarding Iran. Yaghoubian said the administration and the Department of Defense are all over the map in terms of the number of troops that could be deployed, in terms of the logic of deployment. He said the administration has no Middle Eastern or foreign policy outside of might makes right, aggression and sanctions.
