Chair of the Department of Art and Design
Matthew Poole, professor and chair of the Department of Art and Design, is a curator of contemporary art and a curatorial theorist.
Prior to him coming to CSUSB, Matthew Poole – professor and chair of the Department of Art and Design, curator of contemporary art, and a curatorial theorist – was programmes director for the Centre for Curatorial Studies, within the Department of Philosophy & Art History, at The University of Essex, Colchester, UK.
His research and teaching interests include modern and contemporary art history and theory; curatorial history and theory; museology; political and socioeconomic ramifications and influences of the production and reception of art; European and U.S. modern art, 1900 to the present; Post-Fordist labour models, Post-Taylorist management structures, and neo-liberal economico-politics and their relationship to subjectivity modulation and art production; Post-Marxian political theory as pertaining to art; materialist philosophies pertaining to art; and speculative, neo-rationalist and realist epistemologies as pertaining to art.
Poole received his Master of Fine Art from the University of Northumbria, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK and his Bachelor of Fine Art from Ruskin School of Fine Art, University of Oxford, UK.
