Internship and Volunteer Opportunities
Applying to internships is an exciting and important step in your education to gain experience in your career. Your preparation for internships should begin at least 2 quarters before you want to begin the internship. This will give you enough time to be as prepared as possible before beginning your journey. Listed below, are links that our staff at WA-IV recommend our students use when looking for internship and/or volunteer opportunities.
How to Apply for Internships
California State University, San Bernardino has a job and internship bank that offers many opportunities in one place. You can apply using CSUSB’s Handshake website with the following steps:
- Click the link to begin browsing for internships: HandShake
- Click on the Students/Alumni option.
- Once on the page, there are multiple options depending on whether you are a current student or alumni.
-If you are currently enrolled as a student, click on the link that says “HERE” under the Welcome message. Or you can click on this link: sign in using Single Sign On
-If you are an Alumni, enter your Coyote ID as the username and the password you provided, then press the “Sign In” button. Or, if you’re Alumni but have graduated before March 2013, you will need to create a new account by clicking the “Register” button and following the instructions.
- Once you have completed this, you will be taken to the Handshake home page. If you wish to do so, you can select “Profile” to change your personal information such as email address and password. Click on “Search Internships” under “Handshake POSTINGS” the right hand side. Fill in any additional information for your search and internships will be listed.
- Click on an internship you are interested in, and follow the directions to apply.

Remote Internships Opportunities
Swipe Out Hunger’s Research & Development Lab

For the summer 2020, Swipe Out Hunger’s Research & Development Lab is searching for a current university student looking to expand their portfolio as a Design Fellow. This person will receive a front-row seat to an all-hands-on-deck and high impact start-up nonprofit experience. The Design Fellow will design and execute the organization’s first ever Advocacy Toolkit. The toolkit will be a resource for the Swipe Out Hunger student network and the higher ed basic needs movement as a whole, including guides for effective advocacy, case studies of student advocacy nationally, and excerpts and guidelines of effective legislation. The inaugural toolkit will serve as an asset to the organization’s programs team for years to come. In addition, the Design Fellow will be assisting the Communications Department on designs across the organization to support its mission and impact.
The Design Fellow will be working with and reporting directly to Swipe Out Hunger’s Chief Strategy Officer and Director of Communications.
Public Relations/Marketing Internship
The Borgen Project

The Borgen Project is hiring a Public Relations/Marketing Intern who will work remotely. This public relations intern will be involved in a variety of aspects of marketing and communications.
- Create a branding campaign.
- Conduct an informal focus group and gather feedback for market research.
- Pitch story ideas to print, broadcast and digital media.
- Create and implement a fundraising strategy.
- Plan, market and present at an informational meeting.
- Utilize social media and develop strategies for web-based messaging.
- Assist with The Borgen Project's advocacy efforts.
- Take on assignments as needed.
Robotics, Hardcore/Software Interfaces

The internship is for 12 weeks and responsibilities will include leading public and political outreach in your state and district. Meet with members of Congress and/or Congressional staffers in your State and District.
Qualifications:
- Outstanding writing skills.
- Self-starter who can produce great results with limited supervision.
- Strong oral communication skills and ability to lead meetings and give speeches.

The Borgen Project

The Borgen Project is an innovative, national campaign that is working to make poverty a focus of U.S. foreign policy. This is a 12-week, part-time, unpaid internship. The selected candidate will be able to work from home and pick their own schedule but must meet weekly deadlines. Articles submitted will appear on BORGEN Magazine or The Borgen Project Blog.
