Meet SMSU Marketing Manager Jared Fisk

Jared Fisk

Jared Fisk joined the Coyote family in August 2020 as a graphic design student assistant in the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) before taking on his current role as Marketing Manager in the department.

The CSUSB alumni majored in Marketing and Graphic Design. As a student assistant, Jared was introduced to the field of Student Affairs and his experience influenced his career path.

“The more I started doing events marketing, the more I started to get introduced to Student Affairs, I was like, ‘I think this is what I want to do,’ ’’ said Jared. “It was awesome that I got the opportunity to continue doing it."

As Marketing Manager, Jared promotes SMSU’s events, amenities, resources, and services, as well as Recreation and Wellness, which is an auxiliary unit of the Santos Manuel Student Union. To market the SMSU, Jared works closely with the graphic design and social media teams in the SMSU’s Marketing department.

The graphics team is comprised of students and staff members. Students are given the opportunity to hone their skills and gain hands-on experience by creating marketing materials, such as posters, banners, booklets, invitations, and more. The social media team helps manage SMSU’s social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, and are responsible for content creation. The Marketing department also consists of a student assistant videographer and photographer.

For Jared, the best part about his job is working with the students. He makes it a priority to talk with the student teams to learn about their career goals and how the Marketing department can help the students achieve them. Jared takes pride in preparing students for their future careers and life after graduation. As a former student assistant, Jared knows first-hand the benefits of gaining hands-on experience while in college.

The SMSU is the social hub on campus and helps students get the most out of their college experience. It is a go-to place for students to gain leadership opportunities, connect, and build community. Programming is another component of the SMSU. It provides a variety of cultural, social, educational, and recreational activities, programs, and events to the campus community.

The SMSU consists of three buildings – the SMSU North, SMSU South, and SMSU East — and is one of the largest building complexes in the 23-campus California State University system. The SMSU North includes a 12,000-square-foot conference center, an eight-lane bowling alley and game room, food eateries, collaboration spaces for student organizations and student support centers, and a bookstore. On the third floor, students can find the Leadership Lab and affinity centers, which includes the LatinX, Pan-African Student Success, First Peoples’, and Asian Pacific Islander Centers.

The SMSU South houses the new financial literacy and graduate student success centers, as well as the Gamer’s Lounge and Esports Arena. In the SMSU East, students can get some R&R at the Retreat, a wellness center focused on their health and well-being.
