Leading the Pack: Awards and Recognition

  • Dr. Jacob Chacko, assistant director of diversity and inclusion, presented at the NASPA Western Regional Conference held Nov. 10-13. He conducted the presentation with former colleagues and a former student as a model they used to support Asian American and Pacific Islander Students at Cal State Fullerton. It was a model which included the Cultural/Identity Center, Ethnic Studies Department, Faculty/staff Association, and Community Based Organizations. The presentation was titled Partnering for Student Success: A Transformative Leadership and Social Justice Model For Serving Asian Pacific Islander Desi American /APIDA Students.
  • Chacko also presented at the ACUI Region I conference held Dec. 1-4. Titled Navigating Social Identities and Engaging in Self Work, the presentation was based on his work at CSUSB. He has conducted workshops with campus departments and student groups around diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the work focused on learning about yourself and the identities you hold. He has also covered topics, such as racism and white supremacy. 
  • In the Department of Housing and Residential Education, the Residence Halls Association (RHA) Executive Board and three Village Council members attended NACURH’s virtual Regional Leadership Conference hosted by Washington State University. The participants engaged in multiple skill building workshops, learned about best practices from other regional institutions, and networked with other student leaders and professional advisors. The participants said the conference was a beneficial experience, and they gained skills and information that would help them in their student leader roles and their professional development. Additionally, members of CSUSB’s RHA conducted three different presentations at the conference, one of which earned a Top 10 Programs award:
