Transcript 00:00 my name is tyler lange i was born in 00:02 rialto california yes i grew up in 00:03 rialto and i'm happy to be working in my 00:05 hometown and contributing i attended 00:08 csusb from 2010 to 2015. i graduated 00:12 with a bachelor's degree in sociology i 00:14 graduated with my degree in sociology i 00:16 pursued a job as an instructional aide 00:19 working in a special needs class and i 00:21 really enjoyed it and i figured it'd be 00:23 a natural fit for somebody especially as 00:25 a sociology major who already had that 00:27 interest in working with other people 00:29 and having a commitment to community 00:31 service i thought that pursuing a career 00:33 as a teacher would be a great way for me 00:35 to contribute to society and help help 00:38 the next generation and enlighten uh 00:40 young minds it was not my intention it 00:43 just so happened that i was able to find 00:46 a job working in rialto it was not my 00:49 original intention but i'm glad that i 00:50 was able to and i do have a passion for 00:53 working in my hometown i do love being 00:55 able to make that impact i think it's 00:57 better to teach where you grew up 00:58 because i can relate to the students a 01:00 little bit better and i know that i can 01:04 serve as an example and as a role model 01:06 for students in this community to show 01:08 that i came from the same community and 01:10 i was able to get an education and to 01:13 get a good successful career so i think 01:15 it's important for someone from the 01:17 community to work within that community 01:19 as well i chose csusb because it was a 01:22 local school it was affordable but you 01:24 know despite its affordability it does 01:26 have a prestigious reputation and my 01:28 mother's an alum as well so i've heard 01:31 nothing but great things about cal state 01:32 san bernardino so i wanted to experience 01:35 being a coyote 01:36 my primary goal is to just continue 01:38 serving the citizens of the inland 01:40 empire as an educator and continuing to 01:42 prepare the next generation for success 01:46 as a cal state san bernardino student i 01:48 worked in the admissions office i worked 01:50 as a student intern and as a campus tour 01:53 guide so i was really able to understand 01:55 everything that cal state san bernardino 01:56 had to offer and really 01:59 encourage other people into pursuing an 02:01 education at cal state san bernardino so 02:03 that job did help me become a lot more 02:05 attached to the campus community one of 02:07 the main things that people were 02:09 surprised to learn about cal state san 02:10 bernardino was just how beautiful the 02:12 campus actually was itself like a lot of 02:14 people may have heard things about cal 02:16 state san bernardino but actually being 02:18 able to see the campus itself and 02:20 experience its beauty for some people is 02:22 shocking i think a lot of people don't 02:24 underestimate how beautiful cal state 02:26 san bernardino's campus is and i think 02:28 another thing too is people don't 02:30 understand just how highly ranked a lot 02:32 of the programs at cal state san 02:33 bernardino are like the business 02:35 administration program 02:36 so on and so forth so i think a lot of 02:38 people were shocked to know how 02:40 prestigious our university actually is 02:42 i decided to pursue a college degree 02:44 because growing up my parents all always 02:46 advocated for an education they 02:49 instilled the value of education in both 02:50 myself and my sisters so 02:53 growing up i knew that an education was 02:55 a way to open doors and to help me 02:57 pursue 02:58 a fulfilling career rather than just 03:00 settling for a job 03:02 i just pursued college because i knew it 03:04 was a way for me to grow as a person and 03:06 to just gain that knowledge and to just 03:09 have a much more fulfilling life i think 03:11 college opens a lot of doors and that's 03:12 what i was always told and i'm glad that 03:15 i pursued that education because i see 03:17 that everyone who told me that college 03:19 was a way to open doors and open 03:21 opportunities was correct 03:23 i would tell them that it's an 03:24 incredible place to get an education 03:25 it's diverse you're going to meet a lot 03:27 of incredible people you're going to 03:29 have a lot of great professors that 03:30 truly do value as a student and as a 03:33 person more than just a number and i 03:35 think that it's also just a great place 03:37 for you to just learn different things 03:39 and kind of expand your horizons and 03:40 become a more multifaceted person and 03:43 just be expose yourself to different 03:45 subject areas that you may not 03:46 necessarily have thought that you had an 03:49 interest in 03:50 csusb helped me personally and 03:52 professionally obviously having a 03:54 college degree as i've alluded to did 03:57 open a lot of doors and was able to help 03:59 me find employment right when i got out 04:01 of school and it did prepare me with the 04:03 necessary skills to contribute to a work 04:05 environment but personally cal state san 04:07 bernardino was able to benefit me 04:10 because going to school in such a 04:11 diverse environment was able to give me 04:13 the skills and help me grow as a person 04:16 and understand different people 04:18 different cultures different ideologies 04:20 so i definitely think that my experience 04:22 at cal state san bernardino helped me 04:24 mature as a person and shape me into the 04:26 man that i am today i decided to become 04:28 a teacher because i wanted to make an 04:30 impact i think that's the biggest thing 04:33 uh as a teacher you are 04:36 really for a lot of students you are the 04:37 most positive adult figure that they may 04:39 have in their lives so i wanted to serve 04:41 as a role model especially in my 04:43 community and especially as a young 04:45 black male i wanted to contribute to 04:47 students who look just like me and had 04:49 similar experiences so as a teacher i'm 04:52 able to advocate for education and be on 04:55 the front lines in really working in the 04:57 community and helping people i teach 04:59 special education because i think that's 05:01 special that students with special needs 05:04 are often misunderstood and very 05:06 underestimated i think a lot of people 05:09 don't truly have an idea of what 05:10 potential that special education 05:12 students have so i wanted to serve as 05:15 somebody that could help reach help 05:17 those students reach that potential i 05:19 know that a lot of these students have 05:20 so much innate ability and i do truly 05:22 believe that it takes the right person 05:24 the right educator to help those 05:26 students realize that ability and to get 05:28 that ability out of them so you know in 05:30 short i wanted to give students with 05:32 special needs an opportunity i wanted to 05:34 give them a chance at having a good 05:37 education the same chance that every 05:39 student every other student is entitled 05:41 to 05:42 the pandemic affected my teaching in 05:44 many ways but i think the main way that 05:46 the pandemic affected my teaching was 05:48 that i learned to be more cognizant of 05:51 some of the other things that factor 05:52 into a student's life home life and 05:55 family structure because the pandemic 05:57 affected every one of us in a certain 05:59 type of way people lost family members 06:01 people lost jobs so i as a teacher had 06:04 to learn how to prioritize mental health 06:06 as much as i prioritize academic 06:08 progress so i had to learn to really 06:11 incorporate mental health strategies 06:13 into my teaching a lot more and to make 06:15 sure that my students were doing well 06:18 not just academically but within their 06:19 mental well-being as well the pandemic 06:21 has actually forced me to interact with 06:23 my students a lot more and has forced me 06:25 to engage with the the students that i 06:28 work with a lot more when we were 06:29 working virtually doing what we call 06:31 distance learning i took time out of 06:33 every class to engage with my students 06:35 and discuss non-school related subjects 06:37 for example sports a lot of my students 06:40 myself included were interested in anime 06:42 we were interested in video games so we 06:44 would just talk about those things that 06:46 students are interested in just to take 06:48 their minds off of a lot of the drama 06:50 and a lot of the other things going on 06:52 in the world since we've been back to an 06:54 in-person setting i've really made it a 06:56 point this year to get to know every 06:58 single student here at henry elementary 07:00 and to know something about them so not 07:02 just that they're a second grader for 07:04 example taking the time to know that 07:05 their birthday is in february or that 07:08 they have an interest in football and 07:10 just discussing things with those kids 07:12 and really just getting to know them a 07:14 lot prior to the pandemic i had already 07:16 been a large advocate for the use of 07:18 technology in the classroom so i had 07:20 already been utilizing 07:22 google classroom as a major resource in 07:24 my class i had essentially already had a 07:26 paperless classroom my students use 07:28 google classroom to access and submit 07:30 assignments we relied heavily on the use 07:33 of various computer programs so i was 07:35 fortunate that some of the really 07:38 detrimental effects of transitioning to 07:40 virtual learning were mitigated a bit 07:42 because my students were very prepared 07:44 for that setup a lot of my students 07:46 already knew how to navigate the 07:48 technology and access it so 07:51 utilizing the technology fortunately for 07:53 me was not a large challenge for me 07:56 during the pandemic i think diversity is 07:58 having an eclectic mix of different 08:00 personalities different cultures 08:03 different religions different ideologies 08:06 so on and so forth all working within a 08:09 common space or a common setting 08:12 the diversity at csusb was a major 08:15 selling point for me attending the 08:16 university i thought that it would be 08:18 really important for me to attend a 08:20 school where i'd be exposed to different 08:22 types of people and not just stuck in a 08:24 bubble around like-minded people i 08:26 thought that it was great for me to be 08:28 able to attend a school that had 08:30 different perspectives on issues 08:32 different viewpoints different things 08:33 that i hadn't quite considered so i 08:35 thought that that was a major point for 08:37 me in attending cal state san bernardino 08:39 because in the real world you're going 08:41 to be working in diverse environments 08:43 you know at a school site within the 08:45 office you name it so you have to know 08:47 how to navigate working with different 08:49 types of people and i think that cal 08:50 state san bernardino was able to give me 08:52 that perfect experience 08:54 in working with a diverse people group 08:56 of people in my opinion a diverse campus 08:59 is where you have just a different mix 09:01 of so many different types let me try 09:03 that again i'm sorry 09:04 so 09:05 in my opinion a diverse campus has a 09:08 different mix of people who have 09:10 different backgrounds different cultures 09:13 different religions different political 09:14 views i think a diverse environment out 09:17 of campus is important because it really 09:18 does help prepare you for the quote 09:20 unquote real world in the real world 09:22 you're going to be associating with 09:24 different types of people people who may 09:26 not have the same type of opinion as you 09:27 people who may not have the same 09:29 religion as you people who may not have 09:31 the same culture as you and you're going 09:33 to have to learn how to work with those 09:35 individuals so college will give you 09:37 that necessary experience a diverse 09:38 college would give you that necessary 09:40 experience 09:42 i think that a diverse campus 09:43 environment is important because it 09:45 helps prepare you for the challenges in 09:47 the real world quote unquote because in 09:49 the real world you're going to be 09:51 interacting with different types of 09:52 people who may not have the same 09:54 religious views as you the same 09:55 political views the same cultural 09:57 background so on and so forth so a 09:59 diverse campus is important because it 10:01 gives you that experience in 10:02 understanding different different types 10:04 of people and just working with those 10:06 people towards a common goal which you 10:08 may be doing in a workspace for example 10:10 as i reflect on my time as a student at 10:12 csusb the major experience that i got 10:14 that helped shape me as a person was my 10:17 freshman year living in serrano village 10:19 living in the freshman dorms i lived in 10:21 joshua hall and for me that really gave 10:24 me the full college experience i was 10:26 able to really feel as though i was a 10:29 member of the campus community i was 10:30 able to establish a lot of friendships a 10:32 lot of great relationships with people 10:34 that i still hold to this day and my 10:37 experience helped me grow as a man and 10:39 be helped me grow and mature and to just 10:41 get a little bit of that experience 10:43 living on my own and just being 10:45 responsible for my own decisions and not 10:47 having my parents always there 10:49 my mentors at csusb i can i can list so 10:52 many people but if i had to narrow it 10:54 down it would be five people that i 10:56 would identify as really helping me grow 10:58 during my time at csusb the first i can 11:01 name is lucia zarate who's an admissions 11:04 counselor at the admissions office at 11:05 cal state san bernardino i worked under 11:07 her for two years and she really helped 11:10 give me great work experience and great 11:12 guidance during my time there and the 11:14 other four individuals were all 11:15 professors within the sociology 11:17 department the first one is professor 11:19 don howie who i still communicate with 11:21 to this day 11:22 so i'm glad that i still can keep in 11:24 contact with her another one was dr jose 11:26 munoz who i think was a great professor 11:29 and i remember writing a paper for him 11:31 for sociology 311 and it's my favorite 11:34 paper so i hope he still has that paper 11:36 because i love it it's one of my 11:38 absolute favorite papers it's hilarious 11:40 another professor is dr mary texera who 11:43 i spent sociology 590 with her and she 11:46 was a really great professor and i 11:48 remember having great discussions in her 11:50 class and really enjoying my time as a 11:53 student within her class and then the 11:55 final is dr ogre bright who i spent i 11:58 had her for i cannot remember the 11:59 specific class but i remember taking her 12:02 on uh deviant behavior and i really 12:05 enjoyed that class and it really helped 12:07 open my mind to just some of the 12:09 experiences that 12:10 other people may have in the world and 12:12 just understand the real world and 12:14 things that go on 12:16 for me personally the thing about csusb 12:18 that surprised me was just how much i 12:21 ended up enjoying it you know a lot of 12:23 people dream of going to college very 12:25 far away going to the other side of the 12:27 country 12:28 going wherever and i went basically in 12:30 my own backyard 12:32 so i was surprised at how much i enjoyed 12:35 my time and how much it actually felt as 12:37 though i even though i was local how 12:39 much it felt like i was away if that 12:41 makes sense because i was in a different 12:43 environment and i was able to better 12:44 immerse myself within that environment i 12:47 would encourage all prospective cal 12:48 state san bernardino students to really 12:50 get involved in the campus community as 12:52 much as possible and you can do that by 12:55 looking into different clubs i'm sure 12:56 every major has a specific club and 12:58 there's different organizations that you 13:00 can really look into and really help 13:02 maximize your college experience you 13:04 know as a student i was not involved in 13:06 those different extracurricular 13:08 activities and i really wish that i had 13:10 been a lot more involved so i would 13:11 encourage prospective students to really 13:13 pursue those type of opportunities 13:16 i would tell all prospective cal state 13:18 san bernardino students to really look 13:19 into joining clubs and looking into 13:22 different organizations as a cal state 13:24 san bernardino student that was 13:26 something that i did not do and i truly 13:28 regret it and i wish i had looked into 13:30 more extracurricular activities so i 13:32 would definitely encourage all 13:33 prospective cal state san bernardinos to 13:34 look into some of those extracurricular 13:36 activities so that you can maximize your 13:38 college experience 13:39 as a cal state san bernardino student 13:41 there are multiple ways that you can get 13:43 involved they're not just limited to 13:44 joining a club or an organization even 13:46 though those are great options 13:48 you can also work on campus you can 13:51 pursue an internship within a department 13:53 for me i was able to intern at the cal 13:55 state san bernardino admissions office 13:57 and that really did help me immerse 13:59 myself within the campus community and 14:01 maximize my college experience 14:04 when i think of cal state san bernardino 14:06 i just think of a great environment and 14:07 a great place to receive an education 14:10 and for just growth as a person 14:13 my name is tyler lange i love csusb and 14:16 i'm a coyote for life
