Adventure Welcome Experience

The Adventure Welcome Experience (AWE) offers first-year and transfer students a warm welcome to the CSUSB community, as well as provides the tools to successfully navigate the transition into Coyote life. Students will explore the beautiful outdoors of California and develop lasting relationships while on a fun-filled journey of self-discovery, leadership development, & lasting memories!

AWE is a program within the CSUSB Recreation & Wellness Department and consists of various trips held during the summer prior to the start of the school year. Each trip is 4 days/3 nights and consist of 6-10 participants and 2 experienced Adventure Program Leaders. Join us this summer and have AWE help inspire you for life as a Coyote!

Trip Activities:

A variety of activities will occur on each trip. All trips will begin with team building on the CSUSB Leadership Challenge Course and a tour of the campus. The “Santa Cruz Island Camp and Explore” trip will include hiking, snorkeling, and evening programming. The “Black Canyon Paddle and Camp” trip will include hiking, kayaking, and evening programming. The “Yosemite Backpack” trips includes wilderness travel carrying 40 lbs. packs in wilderness setting as well as evening programing. No previous outdoor experience in required; instruction and s equipment will be provided for all activities.

Activity Level:

Yosemite Backpack – Level 3
Designed for the seasoned explorer as well as the daring novice. Participants on this trip will experience advanced challenges for beginners. You may experience longer hours, higher mileage, greater elevations or rigorous challenges. There is also potential for higher levels of exertion on these trips.

Santa Cruz Island Camp and Explore – Level 2
Designed for the novice adventurer looking to learn more about the outdoors. These trips will ease you out of your comfort zone, and teach you some of the basic essentials of what to do and how to do it in order to have fun in the wilderness. No experience is needed to sign up for these trips, but a basic level of fitness will help to make these trips more enjoyable.

Black Canyon Paddle and Camp – Level 3
Designed for the seasoned explorer as well as the daring novice.  Participants on this trip will experience advanced challenges for beginners. You may experience longer hours, higher mileage, greater elevations or rigorous challenges. There is also potential for higher levels of exertion on these trips.

Accommodations:
Backpack trips. No showers will be available. Pit toilets are available the first night with running water. The remainder of the trip is without restrooms, requiring everyone to practice the Leave No Trace Principle of Disposing of Waste Properly. Light weight tents, warm synthetic sleeping bags, foam pads and ground tarps will be provided to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. We will set our campsite on hard packed soil all three nights.

Light weight tents, warm synthetic sleeping bags, foam pads and ground tarps will be provided to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. We will set our campsite on hard packed soil all three nights.

Santa Cruz Island Camp and Explore. Vault toilets and no showers are available as well as drinking water. Fee: $175
Thanks to the support of the Office of Student Engagement and University Enterprise Corporation we have been able to keep cost low.

Scholarship Opportunity:
Scholarships have been awarded to Transfer AWE participants. If you would like to register for Transfer Student AWE please send payment with registration. 

Limited need-based scholarships are available. If you are applying for a need based scholarship please submit packet without payment and you will be notified if the scholarship was granted. If scholarship is not granted you can pay the fee or withdraw your application. Please send a copy Student Aid Report (SAR) with you application if requesting a scholarship. 

Fee Includes:
Trip fees includes equipment, transportation from and back to CSUSB, leaders, meals, activities and a t-shirt!

Registration:

To secure a spot you must complete and return the registration packet with full payment prior to the registration deadline. Sign-up early, space is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
