Teaching
Paul teaches MGMT 621 – Entrepreneurship and New Ventures; MGMT 623 – Piloting the Entrepreneurial Venture; and MGMT 626 – International New Venture Development.
Research
Dr. Kirwan's areas of research are social networks, international new ventures and new venture formation. His notable publication is the following: Van der Sijde, P. and Kirwan, P. (2009). Preface to the theme: Supporting university spinoffs to realize their global potential. International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business, Vol. 3, No. 2, pp. 182-186.
Business/Consulting
Paul has over 10 years experience working for and supporting entrepreneurial ventures. Prior to joining CSUSB he worked for six years at the Dutch Institute for Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship (Nikos) at the University of Twente where he completed his dissertation “It is what you know and who you know: An investigation into the development of high tech start-up firms.” In this he explored the network development of microsystems and nanotechnology firms in Europe and the United States. During his time at Nikos he was also heavily involved at a project management level in several European Union projects aimed at fostering entrepreneurship in both academia and on a wider societal level. Also, while at Nikos he conducted expeditionary marketing studies for emerging high-tech start-ups firms. He previously worked as a business development officer for a software development start-up company in Cork, Ireland.
