Music Scholarships

The Music Department awards several scholarships to new and returning music majors every year. Only declared music majors are eligible for a music scholarship.

Applications for Music Scholarships are due in CSUSB’s Scholarship Manager Portal AND the Music Department Application and Scholarship Form by  February 1, 2022.

Application Process

Applications for Music Scholarships must be submitted through both:

Note that the full music scholarship application process will require the following materials:

  • A letter of recommendation (submitted through Scholarship Manager).
  • A confirmation from your high school or most recent college counselor of your current GPA (submitted through Scholarship Manager).
    • The application system will automatically contact the relevant people via email based on information you provide when you apply. The letter and confirmation will be due approximately two weeks after the application deadline, so please make sure the contact information you provide is accurate and current. After you submit your application, you should independently contact your counselor and recommender to encourage timely responses.
  • Your latest unofficial transcript(s) from your highest level of education (submitted through the Music Department Application and Scholarship Form).
    • Please upload your PDF transcript(s) to a Drive or Dropbox folder and paste the link in the form.
  • An audition video (submitted through Scholarship Manager AND the Music Department Application and Scholarship Form).
    • ALL Music Department scholarships require audition videos.
    • Applicants must submit links to an online audio or video recording as their audition. Video recordings are preferred, and the higher the quality of the audio, the better the music faculty can judge your performing abilities.
    • Well established public websites such as YouTube and Vimeo are recommended for posting recordings. The music faculty cannot accept recordings that must be downloaded, for example from a site like DropBox. Only recordings that can be reviewed as streaming content from a website are acceptable.
    • Repertoire for auditions ideally consists of two contrasting pieces or movements, including, for vocalists, multiple languages and, for all applicants, contrasting styles, genres, tempos, or instruments. Percussionists should perform examples on snare drum and a percussion keyboard (xylophone, marimba, or vibraphone), and applicants with proficiency on multiple instruments, including voice, are encouraged to include selections for multiple instruments.  Short pieces, including etudes, are fine, and instrumentalists may, if necessary, perform scales or other technical exercises in lieu of a second piece. In all cases, quality of performance is more important than difficulty or amount of repertoire.
  • A biographical summary (submitted through the Music Department Application and Scholarship Form).
    • Several scholarships require a biographical summary or personal statement, so students should submit this regardless of the ones for which they intend on applying.
    • Much like the personal statement used to apply to our degrees, this biographical summary should address the student's academic and musical goals, as well as their professional intentions.
    • Some scholarships ask for an explanation of the degree of financial need and the reasons behind the need for financial support, so please include this information if relevant.
    • There are no length requirements for this summary, though students should aim for around 500 words with strong emphasis on grammar and presentation.
    • Please upload your essay in DOC or PDF format to a Drive or Dropbox folder and paste the link in the form.

Applying Via CSUSB’s Scholarship Portal (MyCoyote)

To file an application, you will need an account in CSUSB's Scholarship Portal system. If you encounter difficulties while signing into MyCoyote, please go to the MyCoyote Help Page. Right after you sign into MyCoyote, look for the 'Apply for CSUSB Scholarship' link in the 'Student Services' box on the left side of the screen.

Note the application is a comprehensive one for all scholarships offered by CSUSB, so fully completing the application will get you considered for additional scholarships. That additional consideration may result in receiving CSUSB scholarship money you didn't expect, so fill out the application as completely as possible, even if the questions don't seem relevant to a music scholarship.

Please have the following materials ready to provide in the form before filling out:

  • The contact information for whomever is providing your recommendation letter.
