Blackboard Cloud Migration

Blackboard Migration to Cloud (SaaS)

California State University, San Bernardino will be migrating our Blackboard system from being hosted in a Blackboard data center to Blackboard's cloud based offering, also known as SaaS (Software as a Service). The decision to move to the cloud was based on feedback from faculty and students who utilize the Blackboard system. CSUSB will be doing a full migration of our Blackboard data, meaning all the existing content and the entire database will be moved to the cloud. This will have no impact on faculty and students regular look and feel of the system that they utilize today, but has many other benefits listed below.

CSUSB will experience Blackboard planned downtime from 12:01 AM PST December 17, 2019 to 5:00 PM PST December 19, 2019 to complete this work. 

This migration is now complete as of 5:00 PM PST on 12/18/2019. A huge shout out to our ITS Team who completed this work a full 24 hours ahead of time!

Benefits of Migration

  • The most compelling benefit of this migration is that, CSUSB will nearly eliminate the need for system down times in order to apply planned maintenance and updates as we have experienced in the past. 
  • A SaaS model allows for higher quality as CSUSB can deliver maintenance, updates and fixes to production faster than ever before, and the cloud platform easily scales during period of high usage. 
  • A SaaS model means access to the latest and greatest features will be made available to CSUSB sooner than ever before.
  • Blackboard Inc.'s expert staff manages the new "cloud" SaaS twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty-five days a year. CSUSB can focus our critical Information Technology staff on more meaningful, strategic, and mission critical projects for faculty and student success.

Timeline for Project

  • August 2019: CSUSB Blackboard Administration Team will work with Blackboard Inc. to plan for the migration.
  • September 2019: CSUSB Blackboard Administration Team will conduct a test migration of CSUSB data to SaaS.
  • October 2019 - November 2019: CSUSB Academic Technologies & Innovation's Team of Instructional Designers will test Blackboard functionality in in test SaaS environment.
  • December 2019: CSUSB Blackboard Administration Team will finalize authentication and course data migration. 
  • December 16, 2019 - December 18, 2019: CSUSB Blackboard system will not be available for the campus community in order to perform the SaaS migration in our production environment. System down times were carefully chosen based on the CSUSB academic calendar to impose the least impact on the campus community. CSUSB Academic Calendar.
  • December 18, 2019: CSUSB Blackboard system will be ready for campus community utilization.
