Living Learning Communities

California State University, San Bernardino aspires to be a model for transforming lives and ensuring student learning and success. CSUSB is a preeminent center of intellectual and cultural activity in Inland Southern California, reflecting the dynamic diversity of the region and having the most diverse student population of any university in the Inland Empire.  Using this as a foundation, the Department of Housing and Residential Education is creating several new Living Learning Communities through partnerships with University, faculty and staff to provide direct connections to students and linking their curricular with co-curricular experiences to create opportunities to integrate classroom materials and student success.

 

Black Residential Scholars

The Black Residential Scholars (BRS) Living Learning Community is designed to provide leadership, guidance, mentorship, community and a safe space for those that identify with or are in support of the African/Black Community at CSUSB. The goal of BRS is to support all African/Black students and introduce them to campus resources in order for them to successfully navigate the educational experience at CSUSB. BRS specifically focuses on academic success, community engagement, campus involvement, networking, professional development and community support for all African/Black students.

First Year Experience

The First Year Experience (FYE) Hall is the ideal place for first-year students to live and interact. You’ll be living with other first-year students like yourself and will have proximity to resources to aid in your transition into college life. You will live in a socially supportive environment and have 48 potential “study buddies” in close quarters. You will have increased accessibility to mentoring, networking and relevant programming as compared to students living in other halls.

Green Living/Sustainability House

An important aspect of community living is the responsibility students have in understanding their carbon footprint. Practicing sustainable living at CSUSB is essential to developing their life-long awareness of their impact on the environment. The LatinX Residential Scholars Living-Learning Community seeks to enhance students’ knowledge of the diverse lived experiences of people of Latin descent and is devoted to the exploration and expression of traditional and contemporary aspects of Latin American and Latino intellectual, social, and cultural life.

The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Living Learning Community gives women the community that will assist them in their success in engineering and science majors. The purpose of this LLC is to provide mentorship and guidance to foster a network for academic and professional development.

FAQs

Living Learning Communities are groups of students placed together on a floor or within a residence halls based on a common major, common interest, or common program affiliation. Being a part of a Living Learning Community has a number of different benefits for students.

  • Common interests – you have something in common with other residents of your LLC, whether it’s your major, interests or activities.
  • Academic success – studies have shown that students in an LLC have higher GPAs than other on- and off-campus students.
  • Access to resources – students living in an LLC have more face-to-face interactions with faculty and advisors and access to residence hall resources.

CSUSB offers various LLCs for students and are grouped by academic – LLCs for students who wish to be grouped by major or area of study. Students in academic LLCs have the opportunity to take the courses together and live with peers in their chosen major, and special interest – programs for groups of students who share similar hobbies, interests, lifestyles, or organizations.

Living Learning Communities provide residents with opportunities to:

  • Connect with students who have a shared interest
  • Establish personal connections with University faculty and staff
  • Participate in amazing service learning, leadership, and social programs
  • Have once in a life time experience!
  • Students in Living Learning Communities (LLCs) report a much more rewarding and satisfying experience.
  • Students in LLCs also tend to perform better academically than their counterparts in   conventional residence halls (Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005).
  • Students in LLCs are more likely to persist in college and graduate from college. 
  • Living Learning Communities are designed to provide students with incredible residential experiences! 

On your housing application you will indicate your top LLC preferences. If your application is received before March 1, 2016, you'll have the option to select a room in your LLC in March. Visit the LLC website to learn more about the application and room selection process.
