Tutoring Programs - Instructional Student Assistant (ISA)

The Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) Program provides an opportunity for students to earn a portion of their college expenses through part-time employment. ISA's provide tutoring to children Kindergarten-6th grade in reading and Kindergarten-9th grade in math.  ISA’s may also participate in our family literacy program. ISAs will be placed in local school districts and tutorial agencies.

An ISAs beginning hourly rate is $16.00 per hour effective 1/1/2022, and may work up to 20 hours per week. ISAs can gain valuable experience and skills to improve their resume. As a participant, students will also have an opportunity to connect with their off-campus community. Students interested in a paid Federal Work-Study (FWS) job as a reading or math tutor may complete an application for the ISA programs at: Program Application

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will notify selected students if they are accepted to the program. Participants are required to enroll in ESEC 5450 class at CSUSB for the reading and math tutor programs. ESEC 5450 provides tutor training for ISAs to work with low literacy and at risk adolescents in reading and math. Topics include literacy methods, multicultural issues, learning disabilities, and use of educational software.

Employment with a school district or tutorial agency requires the ISA to pass a criminal background check that includes a Livescan, drug screen and TB test. The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships  will add an Institutional Grant to cover this expense.
