  • Early Start math courses for CSUSB fall first-year students (Coyote First STEP)

There are 2 sessions to chose from. Classes fill up quickly so register early!

-June 25 - July 18

-August 13 - August 31

Students with Entry Level Math (ELM) placement exam scores between 0-18 who plan to attend California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) in fall 2017 will live in university housing with their classmates during one of two sessions June 25 – July 18 or August 13 – August 31 for the Coyote First STEP three-week student success focused fully residential experience. The university will provide FREE housing and food for all incoming CSUSB first year students who participate in this experience. The mathematics portion of this program will explore arithmetic of integers, rational numbers and decimals, including the order of operations, percentages, fractions, ratio and proportion, linear equations. Register for Early Start math - ESM 75A.

ELM 19 – 29

Students with Entry Level Math (ELM) placement exam scores between 19-29 who plan to attend California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) in fall 2017 will live in university housing with their classmates during one of three sessions June 25 – July 18, July 23 - August 10, or August 13 – August 31 for the Coyote First STEP three-week student success focused fully residential experience. The university will provide FREE housing and food for all incoming CSUSB first year students who participate in this experience. The mathematics portion of this program will explore linear equations and their graphs, systems of linear equations, polynomials, factoring, integer exponents and factoring. Register for Early Start math - ESM 75B.

Students with Entry Level Math (ELM) placement exam scores between 30-40 who plan to attend California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) in Fall 2017 will live in university housing with their classmates during one of three sessions June 25 – July 18, July 23 - August 10, or August 13 – August 31 for the Coyote First STEP three-week student success focused fully residential experience. The university will provide FREE housing and food for all incoming CSUSB first year students who participate in this experience. The mathematics portion of this program will explore arithmetic operations, linear and quadratic equations and applications and introduction to graphing. Register for Early Start math -  ESM 81.

Students with Entry Level Math (ELM) placement exam scores between 41-49 who plan to attend California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) in Fall 2017 will live in university housing with their classmates during one of three sessions June 25 – July 18, July 23 - August 10, or August 13 – August 31 for the Coyote First STEP three-week student success focused fully residential experience. The university will provide FREE housing and food for all incoming CSUSB first year students who participate in this experience. The mathematics portion of this program will explore linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, algebraic fractions and rational equations, exponents, radicals and radical equations, applications to word problems. Register for Early Start math - ESM 91.

  • Early Start math courses for first year students who do not plan to attend CSUSB in fall 2017

ELM 0 – 40

Based on your Entry Level Math (ELM) placement test score, you must take Early Start math - ESM 15B. This preparatory course will meet the Early Start Program requirement for all CSU campuses. This option may also be covered by financial aid if you are eligible. To enroll in this course at CSUSB, you must first log on to the web portal that was provided by the campus where you plan to enroll in the fall and select CSUSB as your campus of choice for the Early Start Program. Once our campus receives your information (this usually takes 2 to 3 business days), we will issue a username and password for MyCoyote. * Once you have that information, you can follow the steps provided on our Early Start signup page to register for ESM 15B.

Also, if your score on the English Placement Test (EPT) was 146 or less, you must also participate in Early Start English. If you would like to meet the requirement at CSUSB enroll in ESE 99. Please ensure that the course you select does not overlap with the time of your math course.

*If you already have a MyCoyote ID number and password you will use this same information to sign in and register for Early Start classes. 

Check your home campus email and if you do not receive your MyCoyote ID number within 3 business days call (909) 537-3290.

ELM 41 - 49

Based on your Entry Level Math (ELM) placement test score, you must take Early Start math ESM - 15C. This preparatory course will meet the Early Start Program requirement for all CSU campuses. Once our campus receives your information (usually takes 2 to 3 business days), we will issue a username and password for MyCoyote. * Once you have that information, you can follow the steps provided on our Early Start signup Early Start signup page to register for ESM 15C.

Also, if your score on the English Placement Test (EPT) was 146 or less, you must also participate in Early Start English. If you would like to meet the requirement at CSUSB enroll in ESE 99. Please ensure the course you select does not overlap with the time of your math course.

  • Early Start English course for students participating in Coyote First STEP

EPT 0 – 146

Based on your English Placement Test (EPT) score, you must take Early Start English - ESE  98, Introduction to University Literacies. ESE 98 is designed to support you as you begin your transition from high school to college. The program will ask you to reflect on your past reading and writing experiences and introduce you to the kinds of reading and writing activities you are likely to encounter in university courses. Participation in our program will help you make an informed choice about which First-Year Composition courses to take during your first year at CSUSB. Be sure to enroll in a section of ESE - 98 that takes place during your Coyote First STEP session.

  • Early Start English course (For students not participate in Coyote First STEP)

EPT 0 – 146

Based on your English Placement Test (EPT) score, you must take Early Start English - ESE 99, Introduction to University Literacies. ESE 99 is designed to support you as you begin your transition from high school to college. The program will ask you to reflect on your past reading and writing experiences and introduce you to the kinds of reading and writing activities you are likely to encounter in university courses. Participation in our program will help you make an informed choice about which First-Year Composition courses to take during your first year at CSUSB.

  • CSUSB Palm Desert Campus First Time Freshmen

ELM 0 – 29

Students with Entry Level Math (ELM) placement exam scores between 0-29 who plan to attend California State University, San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus (CSUSB PDC) in Fall 2017 will take Early Start Math - ESM 76B. ESM 76B begins on July 13 and ends July 28

The mathematics portion of this program will explore arithmetic of integers, rational numbers and decimals, including the order of operations, percentages, fractions, ratio and proportion, linear equations.

ELM 30 – 40

Students with Entry Level Math (ELM) placement exam scores between 30-40 who plan to attend California State University, San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus (CSUSB PDC) in Fall 2017 will take Early Start Math - ESM 82. ESM 82 begins on July 31 and ends on August 15.

The mathematics portion of this program will explore linear equations and their graphs, systems of linear equations, polynomials, factoring, integer exponents and factoring.

ELM 41 – 49

Students with Entry Level Math (ELM) placement exam scores between 41-49 who plan to attend California State University, San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus (CSUSB PDC) in Fall 2017 will take Early Start Math - ESM 92. ESM 92 begins on August 16 and ends on August 31.

  • Early Start English courses at the Palm Desert campus

EPT 0 – 146

Based on your English Placement Test (EPT) score, you must take Early Start English - ESE 99, Introduction to University Literacies. Participation in our program will help you make an informed choice about which First-Year Composition courses to take during your first year at CSUSB. ESE 99 begins on June 26 and ends on June 29. There will also be one final ESE 99 session that begins on September 5 and ends on September 8.
