Family Literacy Celebration

Welcome

The Watson & Associates Literacy Center, housed in CSUSB’s College of Education, celebrated its 15th anniversary on November 15, 2019 with a Family Literacy Celebration.

The event highlighted the importance of literacy for children and their families. Literacy rates in the nation are a growing concern and that concern, especially in impoverished areas such as the Inland Empire, has been increasing exponentially over the past decade. In San Bernardino County 69% percent of 3rd grade students do not meet current California literacy standards.

Research demonstrates that students who are proficient in reading by the end of their 3rd grade are more likely to graduate from high school and become economically successful.

It is the mission of the Watson & Associates Literacy Center to provide tutoring needed for students to achieve grade level proficiency. The Watson & Associates Literacy Center provides one-to-one literacy tutoring in all four domains of literacy: listening, speaking, writing, and reading to children, in grades kindergarten through 12.

CSUSB President Tomas Morales stated, “As a university, we are dedicated to student success. Without the benefits literacy provides, the ability for any student (or person) to succeed is extremely limited.”

The Family Literacy Celebration event was a huge success and furthered the Watson & Associates Literacy Center to increase the literacy of many children, and expanded engagement across families, parents, and other attendees. Dean DomNwachukwu of College of Education Dean said, “When we talk about investment in the area of literacy development, it is an investment that pays a dividend for the rest of a child’s life. It’s like opening a door that is otherwise closed.”

There were over 120 participants. Event Activities included a story reading, panel discussion, and book signing by authors Judith Valles, Lauren Briggs, and Diane Adams.

Children enjoyed art activities, free books, prizes and a write around storyboard.

The Family Literacy Celebration event also included parent-reading workshops.
