1.                  Announcements

Dr. Karnig expressed concern about the faculty and staff who have been affected by the Sheep Fire.  He asked everyone present to think about ways in which the University might be supportive during this difficult time, as well as let Mr. Gardner know the names of individuals who live in Wrightwood.

2.                  Update:  Making Admin Council More Paperless

In keeping with the University’s goal to go paperless, Ms. Wise promulgated that hard copies of the Ad-Min Council Agenda and its accompanying handouts would not be distributed anymore.  Instead, she proposed that the agenda be projected visually and handouts be distributed electronically.  In response to this announcement, Dr. Carlson indicated that handouts would inevitably be printed, even if they were available electronically.  Moreover, to demonstrate the trade-offs of the new procedure, he noted that the replacement price of the overhead projector bulb was quite prohibitive.  Thus, the money saved from the paperless approach, he said, would be off set by the cost of replacing projector bulbs—a point with which others agreed.  After discussion of the pros and cons of this issue concluded, President Karnig decided that paper copies of the agenda, as well as handouts that contain critical information, would continue to be distributed as hard copies.

3.                  Leadership Retreat

President Karnig announced that the topics that will be discussed at the upcoming Leadership Retreat include budget, enrollment, plans for green energy, and the Efficiency and Effectiveness Advisory Committee, changes on the Foundation Board, and the new Strategic Plan.  He said the meeting would conclude with discussions of “What Really Matters at CSUSB.”  He added that it’s paramount for everyone to understand in which direction the University is going, and to have all departments represented at the retreat.

4.                  Update:  Enrollment

Dr. McGowan discussed enrollment, noting that the University is in good shape in getting incrementally closer to meeting the Fall FTE target.  He mentioned that new student numbers have declined and that the mean unit load has decreased.  When President Karnig inquired about the number of graduate students for Fall, Dr. Kamusikiri noted that, at present, applications are still being reviewed, so the exact number will not be known until October 14, the day of Census.  Dr. McGowan said he would provide additional information to address President Karnig’s question about why continuing student head count increased 33% this past year.

5.                  Roundtable

The number of multiple-subject credential applications is down due to the paucity of K-6 elementary teaching jobs, while the number of single-subject credential applications is up, according to Dean Arlin.

Dean Yasuhara announced that the memorial service in honor of Robert B. Fullerton will take place on Friday, from 3-5pm, in VA-101.

ASI President Fukazawa announced that the CSUSB Block Party, which took place on Friday, October 2, was a success, attracting over 1000 students.  He described the need for the SMSU to have its own programming board, as well as plans to implement a Zip Car program, which would enable students to rent a vehicle either for a couple of hours or for an entire day.

Dean Carlson announced that construction activity on the Observatory will be delayed until a historical study of prior uses is completed, a process that will take approximately 45 days.

Ms. Burns announced that she will look into complaints about the bookstore. She noted that, last year, Follett brought in a textbook manager to address concerns over the textbook-ordering process. She and the Follett management will try to resolve these issues.

Dr. Zorn mentioned that she sent an email to faculty via the Campus listserv, asking that they contact her directly if they have experienced issues with the bookstore, or if they have suggestions on how it might improve its services.

Mr. Gardner announced that, next Wednesday, the Campus will conduct the “Big Shake Out,” a mock earthquake exercise, to better meet the challenges associated with the aftermath of a large earthquake.
