1. Contacting State Legislators Regarding the Budget Crisis
As we receive more complaints on campus because of the budget cuts, the Ombuds Office has drafted the outline of a letter which might be handed out in certain instances to unhappy students or their parents; this draft includes a list of legislators and tips from Ms. Langford on writing to elected representatives. Ms. Langford will also work with Ms. Bisbee to include information for students from counties not included in the listing provided. This information will be made available on the following website:. Dr. Karnig urged circumspection in when and how such a draft letter is distributed.
The University of California system has drafted a letter to alumni and friends regarding the budget cut. Following approval by the Administrative Council today, Dr. Karnig will investigate whether such a letter is being prepared by the system; then Mr. Robinson will produce a first draft of such a letter for CSUSB. He will require information from around the campus enumerating the effect of the budget cuts. In the meantime, Ms. Langford will put together a list of our Foundation Board, our PAC, and our college boards into an unduplicated and updated list.
2. Convocation
Dr. Karnig outlined the plan of his annual Convocation address: he will introduce new faculty (whom Dr. Bodman is requested to urge to attend), new MPP’s, the names of the new Senate Executive Committee (Dorothy Chen-Maynard is following up with who will/will not attend) and the new ASI Executive Team (James Fukazawa is asked to urge them all to attend), along with employees (and former employees) who have passed away. Dr. Karnig wishes to explore the feasibility of including supporters of the institution who have recently passed away; he asks that such individuals be identified and their names sent to Ms. Wise by Wednesday.
3. Update: Enrollment
We are still 30 days from census, but the numbers indicate to Dr. McGowan that we are on track for meeting our goal of 98% of last year’s enrollment. Dr. Karnig emphasized that we need to be able to lay out the data and analyze our non-resident students the SAME as we do with resident students. It would be useful to develop a data log; in the absence of this longitudinal data, it will be hard to move forward. Additionally, non-resident students are increasingly important from a monetary viewpoint.
4. Roundtable
Mr. Freund reported that we are changing our teleconferencing process. Up to 6 lines may be teleconferenced internally with our phones; for more lines, we will be working with an outside vendor. Please contact Mr. Freund as soon as possible if you have any concerns about this switch. It is being made because our previous vendor is no longer maintaining its teleconferencing program.
With respect to the Observatory, Dr. Carlson reported that the contractor’s contract has gone to the CSU for approval. We’ve received a gift from SoCal Edison of $80K; we’re waiting on a $554K from the federal government.
Dr. Jandt reported that the Palm Desert Campus is hosting a conference on hunger this Friday. He distributed copies of the current Indian Wells Theatre season, and urged people to purchase their tickets soon as some shows are selling out. Verbally, Cal Wellness said it will fund a Nursing Advisement and Retention program. PDC received verbal confirmation of a Title V grant of $3.5M over 5 years for smoothing the transition of community college students through baccalaureate degree. This year is the first Nursing graduating class. While there are currently openings at hospitals for those nurses funded through PDC’s program, he is worried about the next couple of years.
Ms. Bisbee reported that Ombuds Office usage has increased 37.5% over last year. Client evaluations form part of this year’s report. Please contact Ms. Bisbee if you have any questions or concerns.
Mr. Fukazawa reported that ASI is continuing with its planning for this academic year.
Per Dr. Yasuhara, the Robert Fullerton Memorial is scheduled for October 9th.
Mr. West reminded the Council that Open Enrollment starts today through October 9th.
Ms. Kray shared special CSUSB-San Manual Band of Mission Indians special events surrounding Native American Day and the Pow Wow.
Mr. Gardner asked that those working on campus on State Shutdown Days to please file an a/c / heating request with the Scheduling Office. Offices will not be charged for a/c / heating on those dates. Special areas that usually receive a/c / heating will operate as usual. Dr. Karnig emphasized that we need to find ways to consolidate our resources so that we’re not paying for single individuals in each building.
Ms. Langford reported that the Student Ambassadors will receive special training on Monday, the 21st. The will also attend the Convocation reception, which will put their newly learned networking skills to good use. In addition, all PAE Scholars, along with returning PAE Scholars, have been invited to attend both the Convocation and the Reception.
