  1. Results of 2007 CSUSB College Health Risk Survey

Dr. Rincon introduced Dr. Robert LaChausse, Lecturer in the Department of Health Science and Human Ecology.  Dr. LaChausse provided a PowerPoint presentation entitled “Towards a Healthy Student Body: Findings from the 2007 CSUSB Student Health Behavioral Survey.”

Dr. LaChausse reported that there is a strong relationship between student health and academic achievement.  He commented that of great concern is the amount of binge drinking by students and the number of students who are obese.  The results indicate that the top barriers to academic achievement are stress and work.

The findings suggest that although educational components are important to some successful interventions, they do not appear to be effective.  Programs must be evidenced-based using trained health educators and that primary preventions should include a stress and wellness course for all students.  He stated that students who are engaged in campus activities do better academically.

In response to a comment that the report is a cry for action, Dr. Smith informed the Council of the Wellness Workshops scheduled during January and March that include the following topics:  Exercise for Every Body, Become a More Optimistic Person, Journaling for Self-Awareness and Healthy Relationships, Sexually Transmitted Infections, How to Overcome Test Anxiety, Stress Management and Mindful Living:  The Power of the Present.  She commented that as a result of the survey the Health Center has been able to obtain grants and that a Health Educator has been hired.

President Karnig commented that we need to be concerned and providing intervention strategies and recommended that Dr. LaChausse provide a similar presentation to the Faculty Senate.

  1. Inventory of CSUSB Student Retention Programs (Efforts)

President Karnig commented that we do a great deal to promote retention, but we don’t have a comprehensive inventory of our efforts.  He requested that within the next two weeks that Council members furnish Dr. Clark a list of what is being done in their units to enhance retention efforts.  Dr. Clark will organize and distribute the results in order for us to know where the holes might be as well as where we’re successful.

  1. Alliance for Education Research Support

President Karnig and Dean Clark recently attended an Alliance for Education meeting at which the ABLE (Applications by Business and Labor for Educators) was featured.  The ABLE program brings business as well as scientific applications into the classroom.  President Karnig commented that there is an opportunity for CSUSB to assist in assessing the impact of the program and in setting up performance indicators.  President Karnig requested the deans inform him of faculty in Educational Psychology or Psychology who might be interested.

President Karnig stated that Cal-PASS has a database that tracks students from K through college and provides the ability to assess all types of data on students.  Dean Arlin commented that Just for the Kids provides an incredible amount of information for all California K-12 schools.

  1. Additional Announcements

Dr. Chen-Maynard announced that Dr. Jeff Hackel will represent the Faculty Senate at the February 2 and 9 meeting.

Dr. Moran reviewed and explained the changes made to the registration report.

Dr. Clark announced the schedule for Provost candidates:  1) Dr. Curtis Guaglianone currently at CSU Bakersfield, February 5, 2) Dr. Kichoon Yang currently at Northwest Missouri State University, February 12 and 3) Dr. Andrew Bodman formerly at Western Washington, February 19.  Dr. Clark will check into the possibility of video streaming the open forums.

Dean Jandt announced that Andy Williams will perform and hold a question/answer period at the Palm Desert Campus this spring.

Dr. Hatcher announced that 94 students from local middle schools were honored at the basketball game last Saturday evening.  He also reminded Council members that the men’s basketball game scheduled for January 31 will be televised and that the game begins at 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Hanson announced that the AACSB accreditation site visit team will be on campus February 9 and 10.

Dean Arlin announced the COE is working on NCATE reaccreditation documents.

Ms. Burns announced that Bookstore and Dining Services Advisory Councils are established but they are light on members.  If anyone has recommendations on who might serve, please notify her.

Ms. Ruiz provided the following Cal Grant update:  The current impact of our state cash flow problems on the Cal Grant programs at CSUSB are as follows:  Advance funding from the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) has been received for the Winter 2009 Quarter.  The Financial Aid Office (FAO) has confirmed that state funding for late Fall 2007 and late Winter 2008 Cal Grant awards will continue without interruption.  Unfortunately, the FAO has yet to receive notification from either CSAC or the Chancellor's Office regarding the approval of Spring Quarter advance funding.  Financial Aid and Student Accounts management have met to prepare a financial contingency plan in the event that we do not receive notification by mid-February for Spring Quarter advance funding.  The contingency plan will include communicating to affected students and preparing a process for our neediest Cal Grant recipients that allows them to obtain an emergency loan on a case-by-case basis.  Information and/or details will be communicated to our campus community in the event that the contingency plan must be activated.

Mr. Jones announced that ASI is planning the annual Mr. & Mrs. CSUSB contest, and that at the recent CCSA conference it was proposed that the CCSA support legislation that would permit 17 year olds to vote in primary elections if they would be 18 at the time of the general election.
