2. Carnegie Designation-Community Engagement
Ms. Podolske reported that the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching awarded CSUSB’s Community University Partnerships (CUP) program the Community Engagement Classification in the category of Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships. She stated this is a huge honor and a gold standard for the university. UCLA is the only university in the UC System, the only universities in the Inland Empire are La Sierra University and the University of Redlands. She expressed her appreciation for those who reviewed the application.
She stated that benefits of the designation include:
· Sending a positive community message that CSUSB gives back to the community.
· Helpful for grant applications and the recruitment of students and faculty.
Ms. Podolske commented that new faculty are expressing an interest in becoming involved in community service and becoming engaged within the community.
President Karnig requested that Ms. Podolske provide talking points for use in making presentations.
3. Budget
President Karnig reported that we are still waiting for budget information from System.
In regard to enrollment, it’s important that CSUSB stay within 2% of target. We don’t need to be concerned about increasing international or out of state students as they pay more than they cost.
The Chancellor has notified campuses that furloughs apply to state employees and not the CSU and UC. The Chancellor’s message stated that the CSU is taking actions in response to the state’s fiscal crisis that includes:
· Limiting the number of new students admitted in 2009 by 10,000 to align with the enrollment funded by the state.
· Reducing non-essential travel, equipment and other purchases, and will fill only those positions critical to the operation of the organization.
· Suspending construction projects.
President Karnig requested that the vice presidents lay out criteria for what’s essential regarding travel and equipment purchases. The criteria should be fairly implemented across divisions and units. President Karnig will approve all recruitment requests, and each request should contain a justification for the position. Temporary position recruitments will not require the President’s signature. If a temporary position is filled, the supervisor needs to be thoughtful about the time that the temporary employee serves – in order that the incumbent does not inadvertently become permanent.
There was concern expressed about lottery funds. Ms. Flores is attending a meeting of the State Lottery Commission at the end of the month and will report back to the President with any information she might have.
4. Announcements
Ms. Langford announced that Assemblymember Pedro Nava, a CSUSB alumnus whose Assembly district is in the Santa Barbara area, is co-authoring the nursing doctorate bill. Mr. Nava also was helpful to the CSU in getting the education doctorate approved.
Dr. Chen-Maynard announced that the Faculty Senate will meet on Tuesday, January 13, 2:00 p.m., Pine Room.
Dr. Hatcher announced that 114 student athletes received a 3.0 GPA or higher and that the January 31 men’s basketball game will broadcast on CBS College Sports. He also announced that Kim Cherniss was named Coach of the Year.
Dr. Aguilar announced that President Karnig has named Robert Gardner as Vice President for Administration and Finance, and that there will be a reception for Lou and David on February 11, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Obershaw Dining Room.
President Karnig announced that David has agreed to serve through February. He also expressed his appreciation to Dr. Aguilar and the search committee for their good work.
Dean Bowerman announced that the Executive Briefing Series will begin January 29.
Dr. Clark announced that it’s planned to invite the Provost candidates to campus by the end of February.
Dr. McGowan provided an update on enrollment. President Karnig requested that Bob and Ross provide a report on (1) enrollments in Summer and Fall, (2) where we expect to be in Winter and Spring, and (3) what we need to do in Spring to get within the 2% target.
