Introduction
When I joined
the university in August 1997, my highest priority was the creation
of a strategic plan for the institution. Shortly after my arrival,
I asked the University Planning Commitee to recommend areas in
which we should excel by doing important things better than other
universities and to propose a few areas in which we could be distinctive
by doing some different things. And I suggested several possibilities
that might be considered.
I believe
the university has adopted a valuable set of priorities. We'll
seek to offer services that are truly responsive to students and
to build on the remarkable level of diversity that exists on campus.
Moreover, we'll try to assure that our academic programs are marked
by excellence and deep commitment to meeting student needs--both
on and off campus. As many of you know, we will also complete
fundraising to build a branch campus in Palm Desert.
Furthermore,
we will seek to carve out a distinctive niche among universities
by concentrating research on long-term learning. That emphasis
will promote our own instructional excellence and also contribute
to a general understanding of the factors underlying learning.
In addition, to assist as much as we can, the university will
develop stronger partnerships and alliances thoughout the Inland
Empire. To better understand the factors associated with effectiveness
and to inform others of the leading principles, we'll also make
the study of partnerships an important research focus.
In the end,
a plan is only as good as the people working to support it. So
we welcome your participation in helping to bring this vision
to life. Thank you for your commitment to Cal State, San Bernardino--an
already fine institution on the road to true excellence.
Sincerely,
Albert K. Karnig
