Liberal Studies MissionThe mission of the Liberal Studies Program is to provide students with a solid multidisciplinary preparation in the Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences allowing you to pursue careers in education, business, government and related fields. The Liberal Studies Program is especially designed to prepare future primary teachers in grades kindergarten through sixth.
A student who seeks to earn a B.A. in Liberal Studies should have a basic knowledge in the following subjects: literature and language studies, mathematics, visual and performing arts, physical education, history and social sciences, physical and earth sciences and human development.
For those students seeking additional expertise in Latino culture and language, there is an in-depth program of study in Spanish Studies, as well. Liberal Studies Program provides for those students interested in obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree along with a Multiple Subject Credential which would enable a student to enter elementary school teaching AND save time (27 units or about two quarters) by working on credential preparation along with their B.A. degree in the Integrated Track.
In California, individuals who wish to be elementary school teachers also must demonstrate subject matter competency by passing the California Subject Examination for Teachers-Multiple Subject (CSET-MS). The Liberal Studies major is the only major specifically designed to provide all subjects that are taught in the elementary school and that are tested on the CSET-MS. http://www.cset.nesinc.com.
