Early Childhood Programs

Early Childhood Level I Credential with EL Authorization/Getting Started

Thank you for your interest in the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Level I Credential Program. While enrolled in this program, candidates earn the preliminary Level I Education Specialist Credential for Early Childhood Special Education. The program can be completed in as few as four consecutive quarters depending on pre-requisite course completion. Please review the program and application requirements below and attend a Group Advising session.  Following attendance at the Group Advising session and application to the university, contact Judy Sylva, ECSE Program Coordinator to schedule an appointment for a pre-requisite coursework plan meeting.

In addition to meeting the general requirements of the University for Admission as a postbaccalaureate student, admission to the Level I Education Specialist Instruction Credential: Early Childhood program requires you submit the following:

Graduate Application to the university Graduate Application. Submit a completed graduate application. Application is available from Admissions and Student Recruitment - (909) 537-5188 or on the web at http://www.csumentor.edu/AdmissionApp.

Application for Admission to the College of Education - Application available at the Group Advisement session and includes the following documentation:

  • One official copy of transcripts from each college and university you have attended regardless of whether you received a degree
  • Letter documenting a minimum of 45 hours in a preschool classroom and an Early Childhood Inclusion Program
  • Original verification of passing or failing scores on the CBEST - California Basic Educational Skills Test Note: Passing scores required for recommendation for the credential.  See the CBEST Website.
  • Negative tuberculin examination within the last four years. See the CASE web page "TB Information"
  • Subject matter competence pre-requisite coursework plan to include the following courses or their equivalent (see ECSE Program Coordinator for approved community college course equivalents):
  • HD 280.    Early Childhood Development (4.0 quarter units)
  • HD 270. Infant and Toddler Development (4.0 quarter units)
  • HD 281A.  Guidance of Young Children*
  • HD 281B.  Laboratory: Guidance of Young Children*
  • HD 282A.  Early Childhood Curriculum  and Programs*
  • HD 282B.  Laboratory: Early Childhood Curriculum and Programs*

* work experience in Early Childhood Education or Early Childhood Special Education may be substituted for this coursework

  • Certificate of Clearance (fingerprinting) or evidence of a credential or permit authorizing public school teaching in California; and fingerprinting. See the CASE web page "Fingerprinting"
  • Group Advising Session attendance sheet - see "Group Advising Meeting" schedule.
