Coursework

New students should take ETEC 500 as soon as possible. There is an orientation session with program faculty and advisors in the first week of this class during which you should meet with your advisor and begin filling out your Program Plan that helps you plan your coursework in the ETEC program. These files require the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Download the Adobe Reader.

There are twelve courses in the Instructional Technology Masters program:

  • Three Education core courses: EDUC 603, EDUC 605, and EDUC 607.
  • Four ETEC program core courses, ETEC 500, ETEC 543, ETEC 544, and ETEC 692.
  • Your choice of one emphasis class, either ETEC 643 (research emphasis) or ETEC 644 (design and development emphasis).
  • Three elective courses that you may choose from the ETEC program electives. Additionally you may request permission to take up to two graduate level courses outside of the ETEC program. Simply complete the Elective Credit Transfer Form and submit the form to the ETEC Program Coordinator for approval. Please note that courses taken before entering the program may not be used as electives for your degree.
  • Culminating experience course, ETEC 699 or ETEC 999

There are entry roadmaps that have been developed to help you plan the most efficient path through the program. View Entry Scenario Roadmaps to find out more.

Emphases

Students have two options for their emphasis depending on their passion and career goals. The following are the two courses developed for the emphasis options:

  • ETEC 643 Technology and Learning II (4)

    OR

  • ETEC 644 Design and Development of Instructional Materials II (4)

ETEC 643 is a course designed for the Research Emphasis. This course is recommended for those who are interested in pursuing a higher degree and would like to better understand a phenomenon that is related to the use of technology to support learning and performance.

ETEC644 is geared toward the Development Emphasis. ETEC644 is recommended for those who are interested in developing instructional materials while practicing instructional design processes.

Taking one of these emphases will help you draft your MA Project Application Form and conduct your potential MA projects. ETEC 699 is a course designed for student to focus on the completion of students’ MA project. The master's project will require a substantial commitment of time. Please allow at least 2 quarters to complete the project. Before students register for ETEC 699, students need to do the following. (For the detailed information regarding the checklist to complete MA project, please refer to the MA Project Checklist below.):

  1. If you are ready to take ETEC699, you need to make sure that your program plan is processed and you became an advanced candidate in the program. Consult with your advisor (Not 1st reader) to complete your program plan. You are eligible for submitting your plan when you completed EDUC607, ETEC500, 543, and 544.

  2. Develop a one-page proposal for your thesis or project to register for ETEC699. Work with your 1st reader (the instructor of ETEC699) until s/he approves of the proposal. Instructions and examples are available on the ETEC website. Then submit the proposal to your 2nd reader. All committee members must sign the proposal approval sheet, available at MA Project Proposal Form. Refer to MA Project Proposal examples too.

  3. You will work with two committee members. Your 1st reader is the instructor of ETEC 699 and must be a tenured or tenure-track Educational Technology program faculty member (Drs. Eun-Ok Baek, Amy Leh, and Brian Newberry). Your 2nd reader can be a full time faculty at CSUSB (does not need to be tenured or tenure-track faculty).

  4. Complete the MA Project Application Form. Please submit 3 copies of the application form to the SMTE department office located in College of Education building, CE 335.

If your MA project entails a data collection from human subjects, secure IRB approval. The form is available on the IRB webpage.

Obtain the ETEC Thesis/Project Template and MA Thesis Format Guideline (The most recent Guideline can be purchased at the Graduate Studies Office.)

You may submit your thesis/project for a first review after your thesis committee (both 1st and 2nd readers) has approved the “content” of a completed draft of the text. Committee approval is verified by the signing of the form entitled "Thesis/Project Committee Certification", which is available in the Office of Graduate Studies (First Format Review). The “format” of your thesis will be scrutinized by a staff member in the Office of Graduate Studies according to MA Thesis/Project Guidelines.

Once all changes are accepted by your committee members, and the Office of Graduate Studies informs you that your thesis is ready for 100% cotton papers, submit to the Office of Graduate Studies all copes to be bound (Final Format Review). Do not print on cotton papers until both of your committee members approve. For the deadline, refer to the Graduate Studies website.
