The College of Education is a leader in the nation in the development of quality teachers for elementary and secondary schools and in the preparation of other educational professionals. All 17 of our programs are fully accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education has also recently accredited the College. As part of the accreditation process we developed a conceptual framework that both describes the type of educational professional we want to prepare as well as the qualities we want to see in our graduates. We describe that person as a "wise teacher/professional educator".
A "wise professional Educator" has developed rich subject matter knowledge and uses sound pedagogical strategies and judgment. The wise educator respects a variety of viewpoints and has an appreciation of context and sensitivity to a variety of cultural perspectives. Finally the wise educator recognizes the complexities of teaching and learning and demonstrates a willingness to try a variety of ways of supporting and assisting student learning.
Like any other professional the new teacher/educator leaves us and engages in a life-long process: "Becoming and remaining a qualified and effective teacher, is, as with mastery of any profession, a long term, developmental process, (California Master Plan for Education –Draft)." The College of Education provides a variety of graduate programs, advanced credentials and Masters’ degrees to assist teachers/educators in this process.
