Our department encourages those students wishing to pursue a teaching credential or Masters Degree in Career & Technical Education, Instructional Technology or Science Education to consider our programs at CSUSB. The department has nationally recognized faculty in each of these fields and several have had distinguished careers in K-12 education. The department’s programs are also NCATE approved. The department focuses on student-centered, inquiry-based instruction and life-long professional development and leadership of educators, informed by research in these areas. |

RationaleThe rationale for a departmental focus on science, mathematics, and technology has its origins in the National Science Education Standards (1995), the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989), the Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics (1991), and the integration of science, mathematics, and technology called for in Project 2061's Benchmarks for Science Literacy (1993) and Science for All Americans (1989). The major focus in these documents is scientific and mathematical literacy for all students. This literacy embraces science, mathematics, and technology and has emerged as a central goal of education.
PhilosophyWe believe that teaching is a thinking process. Effective teaching requires constant evaluation of one's classroom behaviors - and constant evaluation of one's classroom behaviors in light of the student outcomes for which one is aiming. Good teachers never reach stasis; they are always striving to "do it better." |
